2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Week celebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

Education Week 2018 - Today's schools creating tomorrow's world

Education Week kicks off on Monday, August 6, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama public schools <g class="gr_ gr_27 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="27" data-gr-id="27">livestreamed</g> on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year's theme, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first <g class="gr_ gr_29 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="29" data-gr-id="29">time</g> the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the Game Changer Challenge, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today's students were learning at a time of great change.

"From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state's schools will celebrate not only what we've achieved, but the future we are creating," Ms Berejiklian said.

"We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally."

Education Minister Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure.

"The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system," Mr Stokes said.

"The NSW Government is supporting that vision through a record $6 billion in funding to build the classrooms and schools of the future."

The Secretary of the Department of Education Mark Scott said ensuring today's students had the skills they would need to "not just survive, but thrive" in the future underpinned the department's evidence-based approach to learning.

"I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that is being done across our State's public schools to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential," Mr Scott said.

"We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that we are focused on equipping today's students with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead fulfilling lives in the future."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

For more information, read the media release by the Premier and Minister. The new policy and implementation guidelines (PDF 116.83KB) are available on the department's website.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Each public school decides on its school uniform in formal consultation with students, school staff, parents and the school community.

Mindfulness Fundamentals Training

The staff at the Unit are undertaking an online course on Mindfulness to assist us to promote the well being of our students and ourselves. "Mindfulness is a simple, powerful technique that reduces stress and promotes well-being. Backed by over 30 years of research, mindfulness develops awareness of thoughts, emotions, and the body. This awareness allows you to identify sources of stress and anxiety before they intensify and become overwhelming" (www.mindfulschools.org/pdf/training- level1.pdf).

Why Mindfulness is Needed in Education

http://www.mindfulschools.org/about-mindfulness/mindfulness-in-education/#why-mindfulness-is-needed-in-education

"Healthy stress is a natural part of life, including childhood. Children and adults alike need to be challenged in order to grow and develop. However, in the modern education system, healthy stress is frequently displaced by toxic stress. Toxic stress occurs when life's demands consistently outpace our ability to cope with those demands.
Toxic stress impairs attention, emotion and mood regulation, sleep, and learning readiness daily in American classrooms. Even more troubling, prolonged exposure to childhood toxic stress has lifelong impacts on mental and physical health".

Helping kids deal with horrifying news

Extract from Parenting Ideas by Michael Grose

Terrorist events in Europe in recent days have reverberated around the world. Graphic images have been brought into our living rooms and onto our devices via the media over the last few weeks, and will continue to do so in the immediate future.
But what about the impact of the event and the subsequent media coverage on children and young people?
As adults we all want our children to live carefree lives and keep them from the pain and even horror of tragedies such as terror attacks. In reality we can't do this.
So what is a parent, teacher, or other caring adult to do when such events fill the airwaves and the consciousness of society?

Here are some ideas:

1. Reassure children that they are safe. The consistency of the images can be frightening for young children who don't understand the notion of distance and have difficulty distinguishing between reality and fiction. Let them know that while this event is indeed happening it will not affect them directly.

2. Explain what happened. Sounds obvious but it's important not to simply assume that children and young people understand what's happened. Be calm and stick the facts, using a map to show older children where it happened.

3. Be available. Let kids know that it is okay to talk about the unpleasant events. Listen to what they think and feel. By listening, you can find out if they have misunderstandings, and you can learn more about the support that they need. You do not need to explain more than they are ready to hear, but be willing to answer their questions.

4. Help children process what they see and hear, particularly through television. Children are good observers but can be poor interpreters of events that are out of their level of understanding.

5. Support children's concerns for others. They may have genuine concerns for the suffering that will occur and they may need an outlet for those concerns. It is heartwarming to see this empathy in children for the concerns of others.

6. Let them explore feelings beyond fear. Many children may feel sad or even angry with these events so let them express the full range of emotions.

7. Avoid keeping the television on all the time. The visual nature of the media means that images are repeated over and over, which can be both distressing to some and desensitising to others.

8. Be aware of your own actions. Children will take their cues from you and if they see you focusing on it in an unhealthy way then they will focus on it too. Let them know that it is happening but it should not dominate their lives.

Children's worlds can be affected in ways that we can't even conceive of so adults need to be both sensitive to children's needs and mindful of what they say and how they act in front of children.

In difficult times, it is worth remembering what adults and children need most are each other.

On Tuesday the 3rd of November, Jeniveve Podmore from Mission Australia accompanied 4 of our students to the Art Gallery of Wollongong to participate in hands-on session to experience the Arts. The students were guided by a volunteer and were happy to examine, appreciate and evaluate the artwork at the exhibition. They got to create their own masterpiece as well.

The staff at the unit wish to thank Jeniveve for giving our students the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the Arts.

The tour guide commented on the attitude and behaviour of the students.

I Give a Gonski

On Wednesday 21st of October, the NSW Government released details of the $113 million in additional funding schools will receive in 2016.

2016 will be the third year of Gonski funding. Schools are using this targeted funding in ways that really make a difference for students and we have some great case studies you can read on our website.

The only problem is, we still don't have a commitment from the politicians in Canberra to honour the NSW Gonski agreement and deliver the final two years of funding – when the bulk of the money is due.

To help secure that commitment, please make sure you get involved in National Gonski Week next week.

Parents of children with disability often have good reasons to feel stressed. When we are able to recognise the feeling of being stressed, we then become able to make choices that will ease the stress. Read more

 Dryden is our inspiration

Dryden is doing a baking course at TAFE as one of his Year 10 subjects. here at the Smith Street Unit we are fortunate to have access to Mission Australia's Transition Support Project. Jenevive, from Mission Australia, found an opportunity for Dryden at Delany's Cakes. This has meant that Dryden will have extra work experience to that arranged by TAFE.

Decorating this cake was the reward he earned for a week of hard work. Our only disappointment was that we didn't get to help eat his cake. It's bound to be as delious as it looks. Well done, Champion.

Two students from the Smith Street Unit, and studying by distance through Karabar Distance Education Centre, attended an Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) at The University of Wollongong (UoW) on 12 June 2015.

The purpose of AIME is to provide Aboriginal igh School students with the skills. opportunities, belief and confidence to finish school.

Two aspiring scholars, Jack Mitchell and Bailey Murray, met an AIME mentor and discussed their personal goals. The boys also completed a tour of the campus, discovered how to gain entry into their desired UoW degree, and learned about the Alternative Admissions Program available to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.

	Privacy Awareness Week

 May 3-9, 2015

The theme this year is No Matter Your Age, Privacy Matters

The use of smart devices, mobile apps and online services is convenient and fun but it's important to remind students when using these devices to still protect personal information.

Privacy Matters @ Any Age encourages each of us to consider such questions as, How can I protect myself and my children/students online, what privacy settings are available and how do I use them, and what information is available about online safety?

Every day we all get asked for personal information. Check out the FactSheet for useful tips on protecting your privacy and who you can go to if you are concerned that it's been breached.

Teachers at The Smith Street Unit lead the way with White Ribbon Program

Danna and Chahla co-teach the social skills program here at the Smith Street Unit.Last year they participated in three training sessions facilitated by the White Ribbon organisation. The motto of the organisation is 'Not violent, Not silent'. After the workshops, they incorporated the White Ribbon values and principles into their lessons. Lessons include a film or YouTube clip, class discussions and to consolidate learning reflection and worksheets.

Topics recently covered have included: teen abuse, gender bias, domestic violence, abuse, human rights issues, and building healthy relationships.Owing to the enthusiastic student participation, it was decided that the Smith Street Unit would become a White Ribbon school.

We celebrated White Ribbon Day last November, with Wollongong High's White Ribbon Ambassador, Doug Hearne. Not only did we feast on white food, the whole student and staff body created an artwork with our pledges to be be 'Not violent, Not silent' . Chahla and Danna have led the way, showing staff how to integrate the values of the White Ribbon program into all lessons.

We were so pleased to hear that their work was sought by the White Ribbon Program. After presenting just a snapshot of their excellent work here at the Smith Street Unit, they were aproached to supply a copy of their program. It will be an example of excellence and available for other schools to teach.

Welcome to the year of the Sheep 2015

To celebrate Chinese New Year, the whole Unit joined in. Chahla used the cooking class to make a delicious Chicken Stir Fry, served with steamed rice, prepared by the boys. The picking up sweets with chopsticks challenge proved to be trickier than some thought, but gave everyone lots to giggle about.

Dale-Myree provided the creative input- check out the serviette folding. It was a fabulous day to sit under the pergola and see in the lunar new year. We were so happy to be able to share the time with Ian, who taught the boys new skills in the School to Work program.

Harmony Day is a federal government initiative to focus Australians on the richness of our cultural diversity and cohesiveness. It is timed to coincide with the United Nation's Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Here at the Smith Street Unit, we're proud to represent many parts of the globe and boast of the achievements of our Indigenous students. Some have travelled from Europe, the Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Through our Food Tech program, we've travelled the globe. Today, we explored bush tucker at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens.
